Beard Equipment Company has come up with a novel way to raise support for fighting cancer. Starting on October 1 and continuing for 12 months, Beard Equipment will rent a special Pink Tractor to customers, with all rental revenue going to USA Children’s & Women’s Hospital and the USA Mitchell Cancer Institute.
“While launching our wellness program we recognized that employees, customers, relatives and friends have in some way been touched by cancer,” said Kristen Beard DeLaney of Beard Equipment. “We at Beard Equipment wanted to make a contribution to the cancer research community.
“While exploring ways to contribute we realized that we have two outstanding research facilities here in Mobile,” said Brooke Beard Dodson of Beard Equipment. “USA’s Mitchell Cancer Institute and USA Children’s & Women’s Hospital seemed to be ideal organizations to help make a difference.”
The attention-getting pink tractor is actually a 20 metric ton excavator, a construction tool for contractors for general site excavation, installation of pipe and utilities, and land clearing. The pink paint is being donated by Tommy English of Automotive Paint Supply and PPG. Rental rates are $800 daily, $2,000 weekly and $6,000 monthly.
“We have hopes of raising between $60,000 and $70,000 for Children’s & Women’s and the Mitchell Cancer Institute,” DeLaney said. The tractor will be available to rent in Mobile and through Beard Equipment’s Florida locations in Pensacola, Panama City, Freeport, Jacksonville, Lake City and Palatka.

Fairhope’s Jenny Biggs, a recent University of South Alabama Children’s & Women’s Hospital patient, will be leaving Sept. 16 for Orlando and Washington D.C., as Alabama’s Champion for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals, an organization that raises support for children’s hospitals across North America.
“Jenny’s story has been an inspiration to all of us, and we’re thrilled that she will be representing not only our hospital but all of Alabama for the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals,” Owen Bailey, administrator of USA Children’s & Women’s Hospital, said.
Jenny came to Children's & Women's two years ago after a CT scan revealed a brain tumor. The surgery to remove the tumor went well but Jenny quickly developed a blood clot in another area of her brain, requiring an emergency craniotomy. Jenny spent time on a ventilator and had to relearn how to talk, walk and use her right hand. Her physicians, nurses and therapists were amazed at her positive attitude throughout her recovery, and today she is a healthy, happy teenager.
While in Orlando and Washington, Jenny and her family will highlight the vital work taking place in hospitals such as USA Children's & Women's Hospital. She was recognized this summer with a public ceremony in Fairhope.
“I'm so thankful we had the outcome we had,” Berry McKelvain, Jenny’s mother, said. “I realize it could have gone very differently without God and a very talented surgeon, the wonderful and amazing Dr. Anthony Martino, and a great medical team at USA Children’s & Women’s Hospital.”

USA Children’s & Women’s Hospital and Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals have announced that area Walmart and Sam’s Club stores raised more than $100,000 for the hospital during a recent six-week campaign. The total support of $107,873.43 is a 39 percent increase over last year’s campaign, and Walmart and Sam's Clubs will continue their fundraising efforts for Children’s & Women’s throughout the remainder of the year.
“Our local Walmarts and Sam’s Clubs have a long tradition of enthusiastic and generous support for us,” said hospital administrator Owen Bailey. “We never dreamed that, in the midst of a difficult economy, our Walmart and Sam’s Club friends could exceed last year’s giving. We couldn’t help so many children without the support of our friends at Walmart and Sam’s Club.” Eighteen Walmart and two Sam’s Club stores in Mobile, Baldwin, Clarke, Monroe and George counties participated in the campaign.

The Third Annual SLO-POKER RUN to benefit the Children’s Miracle Network will be held on October 6, 2012 on the waterways of the Orange Beach and Gulf Shore area. This SLO-POKER Run is created around the concept of friends and family enjoying a day on the water together, while raising funds for a great cause, The Children’s Miracle Network.
This event is meant to have that special day on the water with friends and family. This event is not your typical Poker Run, and we have some interesting twists to keep you on your toes. It is not about who has the fastest boat, the loudest exhaust or the fastest time. It is about who ends the day with the best poker hand and raising money for a great children’s charity. The course layout was designed with stops at twelve local restaurants and marinas. It can be completed by boats of all types, running at leisurely speeds. Only 5 of the twelve stops must be completed to make a poker hand although we encourage you to visit them all.
We highly encourage all The Children’s Miracle Network SloPoker Run participants to spend a little money with our official restaurants and marinas. Rather than pack a lunch, why not enjoy a waterfront dining experience at some place new. Sample some of the unique, mouth watering culinary creations these fine restaurants have to offer. We have asked these waterfront establishments to provide us with discount coupons and specials for both the day of the Run and for future use. They have kindly stepped up to the plate and we hope that you will consider them in your plans.
Whether you have a pontoon boat, center console, sailboat, or a sport boat, this is an event that guarantees fun for all. Load up your friends and family and join us on October 6th for a day on the water at participating in The Children’s Miracle Network SloPoker Run.
