Need to buy a generator? There's a great opportunity to buy one and save the sales tax during Alabama's upcoming severe weather preparedness sales tax holiday. Starting in 2013, the sales tax holiday will occur in February. But this year, they got off to a late start and it will happen the weekend AFTER the Fourth of July.

From July 6h through July 8th, these are the items you can buy tax-free:

  • Several types of batteries, including cell phone batteries and chargers
  • Battery-powered radios
  • NOAA weather radios
  • Flashlights, lanterns, and emergency glow sticks
  • First aid kits
  • Duct tape
  • Plywood, window film or other materials, specifically designed to protect window openings
  • Portable generators
  • Gas or Diesel fuel containers
  • Tarpaulins and plastic sheeting
  • Any non-electric food storage cooler or water storage container
  • Non-electric can openers
  • Any artificial ice, blue ice, ice packs, or reusable ice
  • Fire extinguishers, smoke detectors, and carbon monoxide detectors
  • Ground anchor systems such as cords or rope or tie-down kits

There's a $60 limit for the purchase value of each item, excluding generators. If you buy a generator worth $1000 or less, you can skip the sales tax.
